SER Construction finds new opportunities with less time spent searching

SER Construction is a heavy civil contractor based in the greater Houston area. Operating since 1999, the company’s capabilities include concrete paving, bridge construction, excavation and earthwork, and water and sewer infrastructure.

For its estimating team, each new opportunity begins with a decision: is this a job SER wants to pursue?

Before the team can make that decision, it needs to find the work and understand what it involves. SER checks multiple opportunity platforms, reviews jobs, and looks through the information that determines whether an opportunity deserves a closer look.

That process means keeping track of work the team has already considered while looking for something new. It also means getting to the pay items and plans that support a bid decision. Even with multiple sources, a job can be missed.

SER began using Bidlo as another place to find and review opportunities. The team could pass on jobs it had already considered, focus on newly surfaced work, and read summaries to understand what was coming up.

During its August customer call, SER described an approach grounded in comparison. The team was still building trust in Bidlo and checking its listings against other platforms. Those checks gave SER a way to evaluate what Bidlo was adding to its existing process.

SER reports that pulling TxDOT pay items through Bidlo tends to be quicker than retrieving them directly from TxDOT. That puts an important input to the bid decision within easier reach.

If the pay items look right, the estimator moves into the plans. Plan-holder information also helps the team evaluate the opportunity. Together, those details inform the decision to pursue the job or pass on it.

One example made the additional source useful in a concrete way. SER found a sizable opportunity in Bidlo that it had missed on another platform.

SER ultimately chose not to pursue the job because of the owner involved. Finding it gave the team the chance to review it and make that choice.

The everyday change is in how the team moves through its list: passing on reviewed work, seeing new jobs, and getting to the details needed to decide what deserves more attention.
